If Iran Nuked Israel Out of Existence . . .

Nytimes_logo Dear Roger Cohen,

I just read your column, Israel, Iran and Fear. Instead of minimizing the threat Iran poses to Israel, you instead minimize legitimate Jewish fears, then turn the tables to blame Israel:

Far from Iran, and the tired Nazi analogies misleadingly attached to it, there is another threat. As Gary Sick, the prominent Middle East scholar and author, suggested to me recently: “The biggest risk to Israel is Israel.”

A core contradiction inhabits Israeli policy. While talking about a two-state solution — at least until Netanyahu redux — Israel has gone on building the West Bank settlements that render a peace agreement impossible by atomizing the 23 percent of the land theoretically destined for Palestine.

Israel negotiated with Arafat and got nothing but years of intifada. Israel disengaged from Gaza and got nothing but Hamastan on its doorstep, hundreds of rockets and another kidnapped soldier. Israel talks with Abbas, but Fatah-Hamas infighting points to a three-state-solution.

So if the possibility of Israeli Jews perishing in a Iranian nuclear attack doesn't move you, then consider the strike's other consequences on the land between the Jordan and the Mediterranean:

  • The Palestinian casualties would give new meaning to naqba, an otherwise grossly abused Arabic word.

  • The Holy Land would also be uninhabitable to any survivors, Jewish or Palestinian.

  • The Gulf states the West relies on for oil would be cowed by Tehran.

Am I to understand that you're prepared to live with a zero-state solution from the relative safety of New York City?

Respectfully yours,

Pesach Benson

Sadly, Cohen seems to forget many issues, including the fact that Palestinians - including Israeli Palestinians - want a Palestinian state and a democratic state by it - not a Jewish state. Wrote about it, if you're interested: http://tmideast.wordpress.com/2009/04/19/roger-cohen-believes-in-two-states-forgets-to-read-background-material/

It is clear Palestinians will not recognize a Jewish state. It is good Netanyahu demands recognition of Israel as a Jewish state as prerequisite to negotiations. It is not so great that Obama's administration rejects such obvious demands.

I agree with Cohen. Israel claims it wants peace but is still expanding settlements and acts like a total vicitm about it. Israel is an agressive state and is no victim. By victimizing it'self and demonizing it's enemy's with propaganda...it attempts to justify disgusting war crimes and treatment of other human beings (muslims and christians alike) as dogs. Fortunately many resonable heads in the world realize the agression of the racist state that is Israel...the propaganda only working on the weak of mind. I wish my country (US) would stop all aid to Israel and end it's support of bigotry and hate.

Nobody is willing to tell it like it is, except Iran.By the way Iran has just as legitimate a right as Israel to have Nulear weapons. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

It's true. "The biggest risk to Israel is Israel", and I don't understand how people don't see that. Israel creates the terrorists and invites the meagre attacks that are launched against it. They play the victim all the time and I'm tired of it. For years they have broken international law and turned life for the Palestinians into a living hell. It's understandable that they recieve backlash and it's unforgivable that the world sits by and does nothing. Though the Palestinians aren't completely without blame, Israel should be ashamed of its policies and its history.

I wonder if writer Dman ever looked at Hamastan's charter which they claim to base on the writings of the Qur'an. If he did he might discover some real racist bigotry such as article 7: The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him! This will not apply to the Gharqad, which is a Jewish tree (cited by Bukhari and Muslim).
They don't sound like kind loving people to me.

believe all the people who talk about Israel’s suffering and them being scared or victimised, are either hiding or ignoring a simple fact that 93% to 94% of the lands occupied by Israel are obtained illegally. This is not a claim, it’s a fact recognized by the International Law, and accepted by many Israeli and Jewish historians.

Out of convenience, and self-protection, most of the western powers in the world are dismissive of the fact that this injustice feuls all the anger and sense of revenge against Israel.

Comming to the people of Israel, they are ignoring all this for the convenience of having the life they’re having today. In large and small cases we all have seen people who know they are possessing something that does not belong to them, but choose to ignore it just because they like it, or it feels good.
Until this injustice is resolved, people of Israel will not and should not feel safe. They should come to their senses.

Responding to Jerrold. This hadith you mentioned is true, but this is referring to a time of war. All countries have participated in war at one time or another, it doesn't mean the whole of a religion is not kind in loving. Also, what would you expect to happen after the suffering Israel has put the Palestinians through? Just as God drowned Pharaoh when he was pursuing Moses and his people, it doesn't me God is not a loving God!!

Well it looks like level heads prevail here after all.

Jerrold,

You are obviously a biggot to lump all muslims together as not nice people. Got some hate there do you? Perhaps we should judge all Jews by the actions of Israel or better yet...jewish terror groups like bat ayin underground. (a jewish terrorist group based in the bat ayin settlement that botchet blowing up a palistinian girls school)If the muslims are so much the problem as you claim they are not such nice people then why does Isreal imprison about 3,000 christians in gaza? The fact is that Israel is a racist state that only will treat jews fairly and has no problem treating anyone that does not agree with thier zionist ideals as a dog. It is so obvious to anyone who steps back and looks at the situation.

The US should stop supporting Isreal. They take our money, our arms, maniputlate our lawmakers (as is coming out now as before). Obviously Israel has no respect for americans or our country and if we were over there...we would be in gaza and the west bank you can bet! Here we have a seperation of church and state mandate that is in place to avoid this kind of thing. We recognize religious states as harmfull for ourselves and since they are not good enough for us, we should not support such states anywhere since they have a dangerous racist nature. In the US I think we need to explore placing more controls to enforce the church and state mandate better to prevent religious groups (especially foreign religious states) from gaining too much influence in our government.

So Jerrold...care to tackle the pesky christian thing I mentioned before?

Ariel,

Nicely argued! It is possible for a government (or a people) to invite backlash by thier unfair, selfish acts and poor treatment of others. It is a good way to get people sick of you. If a people were to behave like this over thousands of years it would be reasonable to assume that they would constantly be a target for the people they treat as a lower form of life. In this case...I don't call it persecution.

Isreal...realize we are all equal and no jew, christian, muslim or any people or religion is better than another. Get off your high horse and join the human race.
