Israeli Media Ups the Ante
Yariv Ben-Eliezer, a professor of communications, says the Israeli media forced the government into a prisoner swap against the nation’s interests:
Usually you expect the media to present a debate - to present facts from both sides of an issue. In this case the media was unified. That's why I say they had an agenda. Even though my heart was with the families, I think the media pressured the government to do something that was against the national interests of Israel. I believe we will pay for it with Gilad Schalit, that as a consequence Israel will have to give up a lot more prisoners to bring him back than would have otherwise been the case . . . .
The media used the families, and the families used the media to get their message across. They put disproportionate pressure on the government and left it no choice but to surrender to the demands of Hizbullah . . . .
I wouldn't say that the media's behavior has put more soldiers at risk, but they did force the government to do something that might cause more kidnapping.

I think this is nonsense. The government needed to first find out if it was getting dead bodies or living people. The government could have said "until we know if they are dead or alive we cannot proceed." The Israeli people would have understood this.
Yes there was media pressure, but not for an exchange of a living monster sworn to kill Jews for two dead soldiers. Ultimately the elected government needs to make decisions that protect the people of Israel.

I think that the media did a terrible job (as usual) and the government ultimately made the wrong decision. However the responsibility of the government is to lead not to be lead. But what can you expect when the government is lead by a criminal who will shortly be thrown out of office.

Regarding the Press Coverage this year - It has been my understanding that most professional fields have a Code of Professional Ethics that governs their work. My gut has always told me that it is the job of the Press to investigate and report the news in a fair and balanced manner, setting aside personal biases. Now, I’m now forced to rethink the accuracy of my guts communication.
