I note one minor error in your dates.
King David conquered Jerusalem around 3000 years ago not 2000.
Shalom, Paul

I think it is a major mistake to start your primer on recent history in 1947, rather than in 1920, at the time of the San Remo Conference, later adopted by the League of Nations in 1922 (The "Mandate").
These two documents enshrine the right of Israel to be where it is, i.e. in ALL of Palestine. It is not only a "right", but a "recognition", by international law, of the "historic connection of the jewish people to Palestine and the RECONSTITUTING of their national home in that country".
Many people forget (or do not know) that Israel is there "by RIGHT, and not by sufferance", as Winston Churchill aptly pointed out over 70 years ago. Ignoring (or dismissing) these crucial documents is what has brought us to the mess we are in now.

I think the core problem is not "recognition of Israel as a Jewish state". But the acceptance as legitimate; the historical claim of the Jewish people to any of the land between the river & the sea.

Thank you for the comments -- I did not find the very helpful though for they do not address the issues in a compelling way. For instance, Israel as a democracy contradicts the notion of a Jewish State. What would happen if the PRESENT Arab residents of Israel grew demographically to the extent they are the majority, and then they sought democratically to impact policy, would you seek to deport them?
What is the precise meaning of Israel as a Jewish state? If it means that everyone is Jewish, respects and follows Judaism, or accepts only Jewish immigrants -- Israel today fails the test!

Who,where, why, how, when, are more important than ever to maintain a free Israel surrounded by enemies who have no honesty, goodwill to themselves or others so let the enemy clean up their own people, property, religion to bring about "peace" .Israel is the only nation of good intentions in the middle east.May God protect Israel ,not politicians who would give away thier precious, tiny land and freedom to exist on this earth, the neighbor's are not helping their brothers but are deceitful.Truth is the decider and will be revealed by our Creator eventualy not by man's puny wisdom. Why are we in a hurry to buy peace and push evil intent?

any financial participation of israel in the resettlement of "REFUGEES" must be balanced by compensation to the jews who had to leave middle eastern & north african countries.

It would cause no harm to let the actual refugees from 1948 to return. they would be quite old and probably few remain alive.
Probably very few would want to leave their families or could take care of themselves. It could diffuse the issue.
The point should be made that Arabs are invaders and occupiers of Palestine following the time of Mohammed. Their homeland is Arabia.
To make the point, we should refer to Jewish Palestinians as well as Arab Palestinians. Jews from Israel are also Palestinians.

Actually, I was more surprised at this commmunique because it was not an HonestReporting letter. By that I mean that it did not correct anything mistakenly reported in the media, challenge any unfair or skewed journalism, or do anything HonestReporting generally does or claims to do in the "Our Mission" section of the website. It simply argued strongly for a particular political agenda.
This is a little disappointing to me, for all of these questions are legitimately debated among pro-Israel people, i.e. this is not a case of unfair bias, whatever you might think the answers to the questions should be. There is nothing yet to fight against. Do we need to have the editors' personal political opinions laid out for us?

Stop asking THEM for their approval...we, the Jewish people as a nation exist, Israel exists...therefor we have the "right" to exist. We fail just by asking for the nations approval for our existence. I don't understand the Jewish hang-up on the worlds approval. We only need "one" to approve.

The facts in your article point out how the plight of the Palestinians today is of their own making - two excellent articles in the National Post of Nov. 28 - by Irwin Cotler and Daniel Pipes reinforce this realization.

I suggest reading "Legal Rights and Title of Sovereignty of the Jewish People to the Land of Israel and Palestine under International Law" by Howard Grief. Overlooked through the years are the legal documents signed after World War 1 by the Great Powers including the United States. What the Bush Administration is doing is contrary to the Anglo-American Convention of 1924 - approved by Congress and signed by President Calvin Coolidge.

God gave the entire nation of Israel to the Jewish people much more than they have today and according to the Scriptures since this is based on His promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob the partition of Israel will never happen. How this will be stopped no-one knows but it will indeed be stopped.

We, Christian Poles, wholly support the Israel's rights of having their own sovereign country including Jerusalem non-divided.It is a holy city both for Jews and Christians. There are so many sacred places for Judeo-Christian believers. Palestinian Arabs have the entire freedom and an easy access all the time to worship their religious sanctities.

Israel today is fulfillment of many prophecies in the bible, Isaiah 66:8
being one of them[the birth of Israel
Psalm 102:16 When the lord shall bring back zion, then shall he appear
in his glory. Arabs hate the word zion, but God is the author of Zionism, their false god is the reason they hate zion, the devil is in their details or behind it. Psalm
129: God has chosen Zion, he hath desired it for his habitation, let them all be confounded who hate zion.
The lord is setting things up for his return.

In one of the above articles is stated "while 711,000 Palestinians left Israel-controlled territory in 1948 and 1949"
This figure is at variance with Samuel Katz who wrote in his book " Battleground fact and fantasy in Palestine" p.22
In 1947 there were approximately one million Arabs in the whole of Western Palestine.(British figures, certainly inflated, put the number at 1,200,000; independent calculations claim 800-900,000). Of these, the total number actually living in that part of Palestine, which became Israel was, according to the British figure, 561,000. Not all of them left. At the end of hostilities in 1949, there were 140,000 Arabs in Israel. The total number of Arabs who left could not mathematically have been more than some 420,000.
I draw this to your attention.

To Mr. Olmert..How dare you say that Israel will be finished if the Palestinians don't get their state..Israel will never be finished..in fact Israel will get all the land now occupied by the Palestinians..Have an election and kick Olmert out or he'll destroy Israel..Wake up people of Israel..or you'll have to fight for your land again..

First of all Amen to Molly and to Steven Israel.
Moreover, Palestine was a name given to Israel territory by the Roman Empire when they occupied and dominated the Holy Land for about 400 years. In that case only, there were Arab and Jewish palestinians. Today Israel is Israel as originaly called or named by our G-D. Finally, people who love, support and stand for Israel nowadays include faithful Christians do not forget that. Israel should not be partioned, let alone Jerusalem the Holy City for Jews and Christians alike.

If people continue to be so fanatical as to think that god is interested in real estate, we'll continue to have problems.
Posted by: Michael at Dec 2, 2007 2:56:24 AM
it is a non issue. The term palestinian was devised in the last 1960's to give the Arabs living in that region an identity. They are Arabs that have been rejected from their mother country. Why doesn't the quartet hone in on what the Lebanese are doing to their indigneous arabs that call themselves palestinians? Where is the commotion about that? Israel is the G-d given land of the Jews . It is Jewsih self- determination that takes back the land. There are too many spineless leaders in the Israeli government. We need some leaders with back bone.

In relation to "HONEST REPORTING"'s article "Annapolis And The Core Issues" (11/28/2007), and just in case there is interest, I AM OFFERING a link to the
site where my idea (for consideration) for solving the Israeli-Arab conflict is placed: http://www.geocities.com/mbehar.geo/The-Canaan-confederation-of-Israel-and-Palestine.html ... Back in May 2007, this idea has been offered for consideration to all relevant parties in the conflict ...
