PA Churches Attacked, More Threatened
AP reports that five churches in the West Bank and Gaza were attacked today in response to recent comments by Pope Benedict XVI who condemned Islamic fanaticism. The pope somewhat backtracked in the face of Muslim criticism.
Today's attacks weren't limited to Catholic institutions. Pictured is the firebombed gate of an Anglican church in Nablus. And the Jerusalem Post reports that a previously unknown group calling itself the Swords of the Islamic Right threatened to attack all Christian institutions in Gaza. Christians make up approximately 10 percent of the West Bank population. An estimated 2,000 live in the Gaza Strip.
UPDATE 9/17: In addition to condemning the violent Muslim reaction, today's Jerusalem Post reports that Christian leaders also blame the media for distorting the pope's speech.

As a Catholic I support the Pope's comments 100% as I'm sure the majority of Catholics do.
Enough of this politically correct language. The truth is that the Muslims wants to kill anyone who doesn't believe like them.

Don't you just love it? A group of people state that they aren't violent, how dare the Pope declare this, and, just to prove they aren't violent, they fire bomb 5 churches in Gaza. Now, go tell the world your ancient religion isn't violent, and that the Pope should apologize. Frankly, I'm a bit tired of the overly sensitive Muslim brotherhood telling us that free speech is not allowed by anyone but them. When they can hold up signs in London begging for the death to Westerners or any one who in their opinion insults them, then I support the statement made by the Pope.

Dvora is right. The Muslims can only expect respect for their religion when they start respecting others. Clearly this is not their current view and in the view of the Pope it has long been so.
Arnold Wesker wrote a good piece in The Times on Saturday where he stated that for many Muslims violence is the first recourse whereas for others it is the last. I paraphrase.
Tolerance is a two-way street. When will we see a Muslim country with 20% Jewish population fully participating at all levels of public life as Arabs do in Israel? I am not holding mey breath.
