Schorr wrong this time
In today's Christian Science Monitor, Daniel Schorr, senior news analyst for National Public Radio, equates Israeli and Palestinian "opposition":
On both sides, Israeli and Palestinian, there appears to be a struggle for legitimacy. On each side there are hard-liners seeking to wrest control of policy and return to confrontational positions. That this drama is being played out, at least for now, by ballot rather than bullet may itself be a hopeful sign. But, as we have often seen, that could change in a minute. Is Schorr trying to compare Israeli PM Sharon's chief challenger Benjamin Netanyahu to PA President Abbas's opposition - Hamas?

I imagine the comparison is apt to a certain extent - hardliners on both sides ARE seeking to wrest control. But that's where I'd end the comparison. I suppose there's a very small faction on the Israeli side that would use "the bullet" against Sharon, but that's vanishingly small compared to the "politics" between Hamas and Abbas.

Sorry Ralph I beg to differ. It's a question of language. There is always an attempt to try and equalise the views of the two sides.
The so called hardliners on the Israeli side are pussycats compared to the villainous Hamas and Hezbollah. There is no comparison in terms of their methods to obtain what each sees as its rightful place.
By constantly making the (dubious) comparison the writer is attempting to blacken the Israeli right wing by tarring them with the same brush. Sadly there are enough people in the world only to ready to believe this tosh.
Right wing Israelis demonstrate their sadness by praying, whereas Hamas displays its grief through shocking violence. Where is the comparison?

Israel's politics are pretty much the same as any other Democratic nation, there are always a tiny minority of extreamists who could resort to violence in certain circumstances but it's not like this minority will even be in power. Hamas however has quite a following.
